Power of Pink: Coming Together to Support Cancer Care in Our Community

Power of Pink
Power of Pink event

The Ladies Golf Association of Duck Woods Country Club hosted its annual Power of Pink event, a day dedicated to raising awareness and support for cancer care and prevention across the Outer Banks.

The event featured a golf tournament, silent auction, and community resource fair, bringing together local organizations and health professionals committed to supporting those affected by cancer.

Representatives from Outer Banks Health, including Look Good, Feel Better Program Coordinator Marie Neilson and Jennifer Schwartzenberg, Director of Community Outreach and Development, shared information about available programs and services. Schwartzenberg also delivered a presentation highlighting the Center for Healthy Living and the role of nutrition in cancer prevention and wellness.

Shawn Nason from the Patient Advocate Foundation presented resources to help patients access financial and advocacy support during treatment, and Jean Freeman, Cancer Outreach Program Coordinator for Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO), shared how ICO helps local individuals and families facing cancer. She highlighted the program’s work: providing mileage reimbursement for travel to and from doctor’s appointments, help with urgent living expenses when unable to work, lodging assistance for out-of-town treatment, and access to local resources and referrals for emotional, spiritual, and community support.

“It was truly a community effort,” said Freeman. “Events like Power of Pink remind us that when we come together, we bring hope and healing to our neighbors in need.”

ICO extends heartfelt thanks to the Ladies Golf Association of Duck Woods, all event sponsors, participants, and community partners for helping make a meaningful difference in the lives of those touched by cancer. Funds raised through Power of Pink will directly benefit the Cowell Cancer Center, supporting its programs that provide essential care, comfort, and education to those navigating cancer in our region.
