Give the Gift of Hope

 Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you safe and doing as well as possible during this pandemic. Interfaith Community Outreach is responding to the ever-present needs our community is experiencing; circumstances made more difficult due to Covid-19. We count on your long-term support,as your support is what allows us to respond swiftly in times of need to aid our neighbors.

Unfortunately, we had to shut down our physical program operations in March. We pivoted quickly to provide our services to our neighbors in need through online applications and phone interviews. Although demand for support in our community increased two-fold as a result of Covid-19, we provided and will continue to provide support.

In response to the increased demand, ICO added new Covid-19 related programs including temporary assistance for remote learning childcare and internet for school aged children. An example of need in our community where ICO provided temporary assistance is a struggling single father with a first-grade daughter. He lost his job because he could not leave his daughter home alone during Covid-19. Facing eviction, he reached out to ICO. We secured a spot at a local remote learning camp and covered his rent. As a result of the temporary assistance he received from ICO, this father was able to find employment and support his household. He is one of the many families impacted by this pandemic.

As a bright light in our community, providing temporary assistance to struggling families and individuals in need, we count on supporters like you. ICO has provided over $459,000 in outreach to help struggling individuals and families with every day expenses including: Mortgages, Rents, Utilities, Medical Expenses, Cancer Outreach and Transportation Costs, Burials, Emergency Dental Expenses, Prescriptions, and Car and Insurance Expenses.

We are so thankful for supporters like you and appreciate how you make caring for your community a priority. Your tax-deductible donation will help ICO continue its mission.

On behalf of a grateful community,

Jenniffer Albanese,

Executive Director

Buxton Fire Tragedy Help

The Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men (CHUMM) was asked to provide one of the collection points for donations to the families of the fire victims.

Our website https://www.hatterasmethodistmen.org/ has a link for credit card donations. Also we will accept checks and gift cards sent by mail to CHUMM, PO Box 1591, Buxton NC 27920. We cannot accept clothing or furnishings etc. since we don’t have the facilities for them. Your online receipt will serve as a tax receipt. However, we will mail a receipt for checks and gift cards with return addresses.

Of course we’re just one of several means including FB links for getting your donations to those in need. CHUMM was asked to help because of our long standing reputation in the community.

We will have a very capable volunteer manager and auditor for this account. As always 100% goes to the victims. Dare Social Services case workers will advise us on the distribution, although they aren’t allowed to handle funds.

I won’t try to give an update on the tragedy here, but would like to mention that the volunteer first responders, including at least one of our CHUMM members, performed some heroic acts in trying to save the victims. They were emotional victims as well.

Keep your prayers going,

Dennis, for CHUMM

Interfaith Community Outreach

The Outer Banks Community Foundation is supporting families through a grant to Interfaith Community Outreach. Through the Community Foundation funding, ICO will offer monetary assistance to families with financial need to help pay for any type of childcare and/or tutoring the family may need. Whether it’s a babysitter, a childcare facility, a special needs educator, or an after-school tutor helping a child learn English, this grant will help families give their children with the support and care they need to be safe and succeed in remote learning.

“Our schools are starting in 10 days with remote learning, which will safeguard our students and teachers through the COVID crisis, but will also present a tremendous challenge for working families who cannot stay home with their kids,” said Lorelei Costa, the Community Foundation’s executive director.

The Community Foundation is working to address this urgent need by helping nonprofits offer new childcare and tutoring programs in our community, and by offering scholarships to help families afford these and other educational programs.

The grants announced today are funded by a special gift the Community Foundation received from an anonymous donor at the end of last year. The Community Foundation announced the Vision 2020 Fund for the Outer Banks in February, with the intent of using the gift to address an urgent and pressing community need, to be identified.

If you’d like to make a donation to ICO,  join their volunteer staff, or refer someone, please call 252-480-0070 or go online to www.interfaithoutreach.com to apply for assistance.

Interfaith Community Outreach | Outer Banks charity - Master Heating & Cooling

When the community comes together, big things happen. Interfaith Community Outreach was contacted by an elderly resident needing help with her HVAC system.  After speaking to the resident, it was clear that she was on a very tight budget. When you’re on a fixed income and when anything goes wrong, there is not much in the budget to cover repairs.  After making some calls, starting with Dare County Department of Social Serivces, we knew we all needed to colloborate together to get this elderly resident the help she needed.  Big things happened! The resident was able to get a new HVAC System installed.  A big thank you to our amazing community and everyone who helped to make this happen:

Community Curbside Suppers Launches on the Outer Banks

A “neighbors helping neighbors” initiative

March 27th, 2020 Kill Devil Hills, NC-The Outer Banks community is coming together to provide free dinners, community-wide, twice per week.

Spearheaded by John and Sue Woolard of Rooster’s Southern Kitchen, Community Curbside Suppers launches on Thursday, April 2.   Meals will be offered to Outer Banks neighbors at no charge, two evenings per week, in the parking lot of Rooster’s Southern Kitchen located at MP 8 ¾ in Kill Devil Hills.  Curbside pick-up will be set up and volunteers will be in place to distribute meals and maintain traffic flow. The drive-up service allows individuals and families to receive meals with minimal contact and without leaving the vehicle. A designated “safe area” for pedestrians and cyclists will also be available.  Volunteers will be screened (CDC guidelines) by healthcare professionals before they may participate.  During this difficult time, anyone is welcome to grab a free meal to take home and supplement their needs.

While it may be a temporary relief initiative for our Outer Banks community, the goal is to keep this going for as long as possible, with the help of future sponsors.  The Rooster’s Southern Kitchen staff will be preparing the meals, however many volunteers are needed to make this possible. Sponsors are encouraged to help offset packaging and food costs. For more information on how you can volunteer and support, visit communitycurbsideobx.com.

“In light of the current COVID 19 restrictions, all are feeling the effects of massive unemployment. Our initial concern was that there will be many people without adequate or suitable food for their families. We have a large kitchen and a centrally located business that we don’t want to sit idle in this time of need. Hopefully the recent government stimulus will begin to bridge the gap, but until we understand this, we want to help.  Our hope is to serve a minimum of 500 meals per night at no charge.  This is meant for anyone who would benefit from a couple meals per week.” -Sue Woolard.
