Interfaith Community Outreach was excited to take part in the Currituck Annual Senior Health & Wellness Day yesterday!

Outreach Coordinator Lindsey Kee and volunteer Linda Chisman (pictured) enjoyed connecting with community members and sharing information about the many resources ICO offers including emergency outreach, veterans support, and cancer outreach.

A program we’re especially proud to highlight is EnergyShare. ICO administers the EnergyShare funds for Currituck County, providing emergency heating assistance to residents facing financial hardship. Through this program, we help local families stay warm and safe during the cold winter months ensuring comfort and security when it’s needed most.

The event also featured flu shots, local vendors, and helpful information on health, financial, and community services.

It was a wonderful day of learning, connection, and community care!

Power of Pink
Power of Pink event

The Ladies Golf Association of Duck Woods Country Club hosted its annual Power of Pink event, a day dedicated to raising awareness and support for cancer care and prevention across the Outer Banks.

The event featured a golf tournament, silent auction, and community resource fair, bringing together local organizations and health professionals committed to supporting those affected by cancer.

Representatives from Outer Banks Health, including Look Good, Feel Better Program Coordinator Marie Neilson and Jennifer Schwartzenberg, Director of Community Outreach and Development, shared information about available programs and services. Schwartzenberg also delivered a presentation highlighting the Center for Healthy Living and the role of nutrition in cancer prevention and wellness.

Shawn Nason from the Patient Advocate Foundation presented resources to help patients access financial and advocacy support during treatment, and Jean Freeman, Cancer Outreach Program Coordinator for Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO), shared how ICO helps local individuals and families facing cancer. She highlighted the program’s work: providing mileage reimbursement for travel to and from doctor’s appointments, help with urgent living expenses when unable to work, lodging assistance for out-of-town treatment, and access to local resources and referrals for emotional, spiritual, and community support.

“It was truly a community effort,” said Freeman. “Events like Power of Pink remind us that when we come together, we bring hope and healing to our neighbors in need.”

ICO extends heartfelt thanks to the Ladies Golf Association of Duck Woods, all event sponsors, participants, and community partners for helping make a meaningful difference in the lives of those touched by cancer. Funds raised through Power of Pink will directly benefit the Cowell Cancer Center, supporting its programs that provide essential care, comfort, and education to those navigating cancer in our region.

The Annual “Dig Pink” Volleyball Game at First Flight High School brought students, families, and neighbors together in a powerful show of teamwork and community spirit. While the Nighthawks celebrated an exciting victory over Northeastern High School, the evening’s true highlight was how it united the community off the court in support of those facing cancer.

This year’s game held special meaning as the team honored Jessi Donnellan for her brave fight against breast cancer. Her strength and courage served as a reminder of the importance of community support and hope in the face of adversity.

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit Interfaith Community Outreach’s (ICO) Cancer Outreach Program, which provides vital financial assistance to individuals and families in Dare County facing cancer. Through this partnership, funds raised help cover travel expenses for treatment, essential household bills, and other critical needs so that patients can focus on healing.

“Events like Dig Pink show the heart of this community,” said Jean Freeman, ICO Cancer Outreach Coordinator. “We’re grateful to First Flight High School for using their platform to support local families and spread awareness for a cause that touches so many lives.”

ICO extends sincere thanks to First Flight High School, the volleyball team, coaches, and fans for their generosity, spirit, and dedication to making a difference. Together, they continue to show that compassion and community are the strongest forces in the fight against cancer.

Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) has been awarded a Community Benefit Grant from ECU Health to support the “Access to Healthcare and Cancer Mobility” program. The funding will help local residents facing cancer by providing transportation to treatments, travel assistance, and other critical support services. It will also help address mental health needs, offering counseling and resources for those navigating the stress and challenges that come with serious illness.

“This grant allows ICO to ease the burden for families facing cancer and mental health challenges,” said Executive Director Jenniffer Albanese, “From transportation to treatment to counseling support, we can help ensure no one has to face these difficulties alone.”
The program serves residents of Dare and Currituck Counties regardless of income, age, or background, helping the community stay supported through every step of their cancer and healthcare journey.
